Rev. DrJohn Swabey aka His Wholiness the Rev. DrJon aka His Wholiness the Fairly Rev. DrJon, is an Australian writer whose book Apocrypha Discordia, published in 2001, is one of the best-sellers of all time. Its message is that "you know more than you think you do." He also wrote volumes of poetry, released several music albums and led the acquisition of Limbo from the Unified Catholic Church.
Psychoanalism[edit | edit source]
Swabey was the first Discordian to study psychoanalism to try to understand human needs and Discordian dynamics. His ideas about Eris influenced several generations of Erisian parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals. His work was cited as a major influence on the formation of the Discordian Shamlicht Kids Club. However, his work was widely criticized by colleagues for relying too little on serious academic research and more on channelling Groucho Marx and mushroom sniffing.
New Limbo[edit | edit source]
In addition to his Discordian writings, Swabey was the founder of the New Limbo Anti-Greyface (NEW LAG) movement during the 1980s and early 1990s. At the time his early books, especially Take the Holy Out of Holyday and the poetry collection Naked Limbo, were criticized by Greyface supporters and the Unified Catholic Church for allegedly propagating permissiveness and an expectation of instant gratifications that led young people to leave their families to join his movement. This was a charge denied by Swabey and the 5,000 young people who were living with him in a VW bus.
On April 23, 2007, DrJon made an announcement that stunned the world. According to a report by the Melbourne Herald Sun, DrJon and The Discordian Society had perpetrated a successful coup that wrestled Limbo from the Unified Catholic Church. Following this, Pope John Paul II, the third longest-serving pope in Catholic history, became the first pope to resign. He was replaced temporarily by the look-a-like Pope John Paul II 1/2 until Benedict XVI became the pontiff.
After the acquisition of Limbo, a psychoanalysis of his 1994 album Television revealed that the song "Limbo" had his plan for the Limbo takeover hidden in backward masking.
Awards[edit | edit source]
Swabey was named to the Order of the Pineapple in 2013, but cited the Saint Groucho Principle that he wouldn't join any organization that would have him as a member. He won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 in mustache twirling, but turned down the award because he wouldn't accept any award that would be given to someone like him. His record as most proficient Discordian mustache twirler was unbeaten for many years until he was dethroned by his twin brother Professor Cramulus.
