Icarus

Icarus is a major figure in both Greek and Discordian mythology.

Greek mythology

In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Icarus and Daedalus attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Daedalus warns Icarus first of complacency and then of hubris, instructing him to fly neither too low nor too high, lest the sea's dampness clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignores Daedalus’s instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt. He tumbles out of the sky, falls into the sea, and drowns. The myth would later be coined in the idiom, "don't fly too close to the sun".

Discordian Mythology

In Discordian mythology, Icarus was the son of the master submariner Hagbard Celine and First Universal Cybernetic- Kinetic-Ultramicro-Programmer, Icarus attempts to escape from Whittier by means of a submarine constructed from feathers and wax. Hagbard warns Icarus first of complacency and then of hubris, instructing him to dive neither too low nor too high, lest the sea's dampness clog his propellers or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignores Hagbard’s instructions not to dive too deep, and the submarine falls in the hole at the center of earth, crashes and breaks open. Icarus tumbles out of the submarine, and drowns. The myth would later be coined in the idiom, "Immanentize the eschaton".
