Sockpuppet

A sockpuppet (Discordian) aka sock puppet (Erisian) is a wholey Discordian puppet controlled by a Discordian/Erisian sockpuppeteer. Sockpuppets are authorized to perform the sacred rituals of Discordianism, especially as a mediatory agent between corporeal and incorporeal entities (and to freak the Normals/Mundanes/Pinks/Greyfaces).

History

(Warning: this section may be too close to the Truth)

Early Discordians Gregory Hill, Robert Newport, Robert Shea, Kerry Thornley, Robert Anton Wilson all used sockpuppets before the term meant more than a puppet made from a sock. These were more than pseudonyms/pennames; they used these deceptively, to fool people into thinking they were someone else/more than one person. Shea and Wilson famously used sockpuppets to write themselves letters while they were editors at Playboy; they would then answer those letters using their editor names.

Authority

Sockpuppets have the authority or power to administer religious rites; in particular, rites of sacrifice to, and propitiation of, Goddess Eris aka Discordia. Their office or position is the sockpuppethood, a term which also may apply to such persons collectively. A sockpuppet may have the duty to hear graphically-explicit confessions periodically, give cabal counseling, provide precopulatory counseling, give spiritual misdirection, teach catma, or visit those confined indoors, such as the sick in mental institutions, jails, prisons, and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst's house.
